Nearly 100 Liberal Party volunteers and dozens more curious residents flocked to Sam’s 2 for 1 Pizza in Spruce Grove on Oct. 20 to catch a glimpse of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he visited Spruce Grove to lend his support to Liberal byelection candidate Brian Gold.

Trudeau arrived in Spruce Grove at 5:45 p.m. and delivered a short speech outlining his government’s accomplishments and his support for Gold’s candidacy. Trudeau had previously been in the Lac-Saint-Jean riding in Quebec supporting Richard Herbert’s byelection push.

“We’ve been watching from Ottawa and across the country and the level of energy here is absolutely extraordinary,” Trudeau said to an eager crowd. “You’ve rolled up your sleeves and got to what politics is all about — conversation.”

The Prime Minister’s speech focused in on a few key areas, including economic growth, oil and the energy sector, as well as recent cuts to small businesses taxes which he said would improve opportunities for entrepreneurs.

“I know you’re going to be talking to families and you can talk to them about the fact that the first thing we did was lower taxes for the middle class and raise them for the wealthiest one per cent,” Trudeau said. “You can talk about the fact, as (Gold) said, we approved pipelines that the previous government couldn’t get done.”

“We were able to do that because we listened to Canadians and Canadians know that the only way to build a better future for our kids is to grow the economy while we protect the environment,” Trudeau added with great applause from the crowd. “That’s what we’re moving towards — a meaningful way to reduce our carbon emissions and get our resources to new markets. It’s what Canadian’s expect and it’s what Albertan’s expect.”

Gold, an economist and professor at the University of Alberta, said that he wanted to bring more Albertan representation to the Liberal government and echoed Trudeau’s points on economic growth and pipeline approval.

“People are looking for a government that does action for Alberta. We’ve been talking about the pipelines — no one can counter that anymore and we’re seeing people who are excited about the tax cut for small businesses,” said Gold. “The infrastructure spending has shown that the government has had Alberta’s back when times were tough and now we’re heading to the fastest economic growth in Canada and Canada is having the fastest economic growth of any advanced economy in the world.”

The federal byelection for Sturgeon River — Parkland is on Oct. 23.
