A 76-year-old woman died Monday in a three-vehicle crash, four miles east of Mitchell, caused due to another two-vehicle crash in which a person was driving the wrong way on the interstate.

Authorities are not yet releasing the woman’s name, pending notification of family. A 71-year-old man sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and a 69-year-old man received minor injuries in the crash, which occurred at 11:27 a.m. on Interstate 90 near the Riverside Road exit.

The woman was driving a 2014 Buick LaCrosse westbound on I-90, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said in a Tuesday news release.

Due to traffic being backed up from a crash near exit 333, the LaCrosse slowed down but was then rear-ended by a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup driven by the 71-year-old man. That caused the LaCrosse to hit a 2018 Toyota Corolla driven by the 69-year-old man.

The 76-year-old female driver of the Buick LaCrosse was pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

A 71-year-old male, who was driving the pickup, was taken to the Mitchell hospital. He was wearing a seat belt. Also transported to the Mitchell hospital was the 69-year-old male driver of the Toyota Corolla. It is not known whether he was wearing a seat belt.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Authorities said no one was injured in the earlier crash, but a 52-year-old woman driving a 2009 Toyota Camry had to be extricated from her vehicle.

The crash occurred at 11:04 a.m. when a 2001 Dodge Intrepid, driven by Carol Chapman, 83, of Parkston, was traveling east in the westbound lanes. That vehicle collided with the Camry, which was in the westbound passing lane.

The Dodge went into the north ditch and the Camry came to rest in the two westbound lanes.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said crews had to extricate the driver of the Camry because her door would not open because of the damage to the driver’s side. I-90 traffic was diverted at the 335 exit for about nine minutes to accommodate crews working to free the driver.

Charges are pending against Chapman, authorities said. The 52-year-old woman and a 75-year-old passenger were both wearing a seat belt. Highway Patrol is investigating.
