Estonia's new car sales down 33.9% on year in June

BC, Tallinn, 06.07.2020.Print version
The number of new cars sold in Estonia in June this year, 1,602, was smaller by 33.9% than the number of new cars sold in June 2019, but bigger by over 600 units than in May of this year and twice as big as in April 2020, figures provided by the Estonian car dealers and service companies association AMTEL cites LETA/BNS.

Altogether 9,133 new cars were sold in the first six months of this year, which is 34.5% less than in the same period of last year.

"The Estonian car market is slowly exiting the crisis. The trend is positive; however, it is currently mainly caused by private consumption," AMTEL manager Arno Sillat said.

Sillat said that businesses have thus far remained modest in terms of expanding and renewing their vehicle fleets, which in his opinion is a reasonable strategy considering various possible future scenarios.

He noted that when it comes to new cars, gasoline-engined vehicles remained the most popular choice, leaving diesel-powered cars far behind; however, the share of electric vehicles and hybrids has grown rapidly, accounting for 14% of new car sales in June.

The sales of fully electric cars have also been boosted by a subsidy by the state, Sillat added.

The AMTEL manager estimated that if the car market gets a chance to recover and reasonable development scenarios are applied, the market will bounce back to last year's levels in the fall, and the sale of utility vehicles will likewise increase.

By segment, medium SUVs made up the best-selling segment with a share of 29.2%. Smaller medium cars were in second place with 22.2%. Hybrid cars sold during the month numbered 228, electric cars 25 and CNG-powered cars 68.

Toyota emerged as the best-selling brand of car in Estonia in June with 284  units sold. Skoda was in second place with 250 units and KIA third with 150 units sold.

Among models, Toyota RAV4 topped the list with 134 units, followed by Toyota Corolla with 78 units and Skoda Kodiaq and Octavia with 66 units each.

The decline caused by the coronavirus pandemic continued to affect the utility vehicles market in June, causing a 59.1% drop compared with June 2019. Results from the first half of 2020 show a y-o-y decline of 39.1%.

The best-selling manufacturers were Citroen with 58 utility vehicles sold during June, followed by Renault and Peugeot with respectively 49 and 31  units. The truck segment was dominated by Scania.
