Development of Porsche Mission E commences

Porsche has officially codenamed its all-electric model based on the Mission E concept that was unveiled last year. The carmaker had revealed in a December statement that the car had been green lighted for production. And the recent assignment of the codename to the upcoming model confirms that development is underway.

Codenamed J1, the car is set to be developed on a bespoke platform, separate from the one developed by parent company, VW, for its future electric models. The new platform has been designed to accommodate enough lithium-ion battery packs to give the model a range of around 530km.

Heading development of the zero-emissions Porsche, is Stefan Weckbach, who previously led product strategy and more recently, was responsible for the development of Boxster.

Company officials also confirm to our sister publication, Autocar UK that the facelift for the Porsche 911 GTS will continue to use the existing naturally aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six, rather than adopting the new 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six unit, which has made its way into other facelifted 911 models.
