The brother of slain Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez raged against a lackluster audience at a San Antonio music festival this weekend, telling the booing crowd, “Boo yourselves for not participating in the show.”
A.B. Quintanilla, issued and then deleted an Instagram apology after lashing out at fans during his act A.B. Quintanilla Y Los Kumbia Kings All Starz’s final headlining performance of the Tejano Explosion 2024 music festival on Saturday.
In the since-deleted post, Quintanilla blamed his now-viral outburst on not taking his medication at his doctor’s behest, according to KSAT.
The 60-year-old musician became visibly upset by the audience’s alleged lack of excitement Saturday, eventually telling the crowd, “It’s like somebody put a gun to your head and force you to be here tonight.”
“To work so f–king hard over all these years to bring you hits, and you guys come here, and you can’t even f–king raise your hands to f–king clap or be happy, man, you know, and that feels sad for us and for me,” Quintanilla said in the clip before adding, “I’ll take my music somewhere else.”
Quintanilla then vowed that performance would be his last ever at the Tejano music event.
“I traveled all the way from Las Vegas, received love all the way from over there. I come to my hometown in Texas, San Antonio, and I get no f–king love over here, man. That’s not cool. That’s not acceptable,” he said.
He then admonished the festival-goers for not supporting Tejano music the way they support the Dallas Cowboys — and was immediately booed in response.
“You guys should be, just like you support the Dallas Cowboys who lose every f–king year, you should support your bands. And Tejano music,” he said.
“Boo all you want, I don’t care it doesn’t affect me. Boo all you want. Boo yourselves for not participating in the show.”
Quintanilla’s temper appeared to fade as the show continued, with him invoking his sister, Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla Pérez, who was brutally murdered in 1995, and reminiscing about the musicians he encountered over his career.
“And everybody that left shooting the middle finger? God bless y’all. I don’t wish nothing bad upon them,” Quintanilla said in another TikTok. “Those are not real fans, man.”
The festival was held mere minutes away from San Antonio’s Historic Market Square, where two people were fatally shot and four others were injured as the festivities wound down Sunday morning.
Officers near a stage heard a gunshot and saw an 18-year-old man running away just after midnight. Another officer then saw the man fire and hit a 20-year-old man.
Cops then fired multiple rounds at the 18-year-old, who was hit and pronounced dead at the scene, KSAT reported.
The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Four female bystanders were also shot.
It was not immediately clear if they were struck by the suspects’ gunfire or police gunfire.
