Unfamiliar. Sexy. Surprising. There are many words to describe what Kia has done with the Proceed Concept, but one this is certain. According to the South Korean automaker, the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show-bound concept “presents a new body type for Kia.” Yup, the 2018 Kia Cee’d Shooting Brake is coming.
In fact, not the Cee’d Shooting Brake, but the Pro_Cee’d. This move is explainable considering what sister brand Hyundai has done with the all-new i30. To the point, the compact model is available in three body styles: hatchback, wagon, and fastback. The shooting brake-styled Pro_Cee’d, which should go official next year, is Kia’s enticing reply to the i30 Fastback. And to the i30 N based on Kia’s choice of words in the attached release.
Described by its creator under the tagline “extended hot hatch,” the concept previews the sort of car that’s “reworked and reimagined for a new generation of driver.” According to Gregory Guillaume, who’s role is that of chief designer of Kia’s European division, the Pro_Cee’d makes a solid business case as a halo model for the Cee’d range, and an alternative to the familiar three-door body style so common among hot hatchback vehicles.
Set apart by the lack of B-pillars, lateral strakes, 20-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, and the rakish window frame, the Proceed Concept makes use of something called Luminline. That’s the short way of saying the outline of the glasshouse illuminates as the driver approaches the vehicle. The Porsche-like rear light strip, meanwhile, takes inspiration from molten ferromagnetic metal.
Up to this point, the spy photographers haven’t spotted pre-production prototypes of the Pro_Cee’d. The 2018 Kia Cee’d, however, strikes a glaring resemblance to the Hyundai i30. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the newcomer will share many of its bits and pieces - including the platform, engines, and transmission options – with the Hyundai-branded model.
Fingers crossed the 2.0-liter T-GDI in the i30 N will also be shared.
