The following police logs are from the Amherst Police Department from Friday, March 29, 2019 to Sunday, March 31, 2019. 

Friday, March 29, 2019

Suspicious Motor Vehicle

8:28 a.m.: A reporting party reported a light-colored Jeep parked in the visitor’s spot at Olympia Oaks, 85 Olympia Dr., Apt. 37, with a male party inside. The reporting party stated he had never seen the vehicle before and thought it was strange because the male was just sitting there in the car. An officer spoke with the vehicle owner; he was doing fire alarm tests in the offices/community building and was waiting for another technician to arrive.

Suspicious

10:43 a.m.: Some belongings were reported in a crawl space in the basement of Gordon Hall, 418 N. Pleasant St., including shoes. The reporting party thought a homeless person may be living at the location. The University of Massachusetts Police Department was also notified. Police located the listed party in the basement behind some ductwork. He had been there for one to three days and had gone to the bathroom several times in plastic bags and cups. The listed party removed his belongings from the basement and was advised not to return. The reporting party/manager of the building did not wish to seek any trespass orders or criminal charges.

4:50 p.m.: A reporting party stated a male in his 20s wearing a gray top and jeans in the vicinity of 950 N. Pleasant St., Apt. 11. The involved party was walking around the apartment complex claiming he was from “Liberty Power.” The person was gone upon police arrival.

Disturbance

11:18 a.m.: A reporting party reported a Hispanic male with neck tattoos and a blue plaid jacket with a large, white dog at Mill Valley, 340 Riverglade Dr., Apt. 340, who was asked to leave the property. When asked to leave, the male got angry and started swearing at staff. He was last seen by building 340, but a police check of the area was negative.

4:18 p.m.: A caller reported an argument with a male. The male struck her with his brown 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer by 81 Belchertown Road, Apt. 69. The male party pulled up in front of the reporting party’s door to drop another male party off. When the woman saw the male out front, she stood in front of the vehicle demanding that they talk. She wouldn’t move so the male party could leave, and she laid on the hood of the vehicle at one point. Once the reporting party stood up, the male drove around her in attempt to leave. The woman again tried to jump in front of the vehicle and she hit the side of the car with her leg as he left the area. The male party spoke to an officer and advised of the same story. The reporting party stated she wanted the incident on the record. She was advised not to stand in front of someone’s vehicle, and to go inside and call the police if she wants someone removed from the area.

Disabled Motor Vehicle

11:20 a.m.: UMass PD advised of a disabled gray 2017 Toyota 4Runner near 639 N. Pleasant St. No one from the Amherst Police Department was available, so UMPD handled it. The vehicle had run out of gas.

Motor Vehicle Crash

11:27 a.m.: A reporting party reported a crash involving a black 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander and a blue 2010 Honda Fit by 56 Amity St. The operator of the Mitsubishi had pulled out of a parking lot and failed to yield to traffic on Amity Street and struck the Honda. Damage was likely to be over $1,000; no towing or injuries. The operators of the vehicles exchanged information.

1:03 p.m.: A white 2007 Honda CRV was stopped in front of a black 2013 Hyundai Elantra at the drive-through of Dunkin Donuts, 229 University Dr. The operator of the Hyundai forgot an item at the window so she backed up. When she reached to retrieve the item, her foot slipped off the break and onto the gas pedal, which caused her to hit the CRV. The Hyundai sustained heavy front-end damage and the CRV sustained moderate damage to the rear bumper. The operators exchanged information.

1:19 p.m.: The operator of a black 2013 Nissan Altima was stopped in the driveway of 50 Meadow St. waiting to pull onto the road travelling west. A black 2003 Chevrolet Impala was backing from the driveway of 53 Meadow St. into the roadway while the Nissan was pulling out. A verbal warning was given to both operators.

8:48 p.m.: A reporting party called about a motor vehicle accident involving a silver 2007 Toyota Prizm near 300 Sunderland Road. The vehicle was travelling northbound on Sunderland Road and the operator failed to yield for the approaching curve and drove straight into a telephone pole. The vehicle sustained significant damage to its front end, rendering it immobile. The telephone pole was severed from its base. Both the vehicle and pole were resting in water that had pooled in the area from the thaw. The operator of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries and declined transportation from Amherst Fire Department paramedics at the scene. The road was closed down and traffic on Sunderland Road was diverted to Cowls Road.

Assist Amherst Fire Department

2:11 p.m.: APD assisted the Amherst Fire Department with a vehicle on fire inside the garage at 1290 Bay Road. The homeowner was controlling the flames with a garden hose upon arrival. The residence was cleared out as a precaution. Damage appeared only on the silver 1998 Isuzu Ute and nothing structural with the residence.

Shoplifting

3:13 p.m.: A reporting party stated that three or four middle school-aged males came into CVS, 76 N. Pleasant St., and took silly string and were behind the Jones Library using it. The reporting party thinks the males then returned, but it was unknown if they took more silly string. The involved parties were described as white males, thin builds, maybe 13 or 14 years old. One wore a gray hoodie, one wore a black hoodie with a red symbol on it and another wore a Puma hoodie with a white panther on the front. The three middle schoolers were identified by other middle schoolers. An officer advised that they’d be contacting the parents of the boys when they got contact information. CVS planned to burn a CD of the store footage as well. A separate reporting party stated his daughter was involved in a confrontation with the middle schoolers minutes before the incident in CVS. The suspects are to be identified; the matter is under investigation.

Motor Vehicle Stop

5:04 p.m.: A verbal warning was given to the operator of a gray 2018 Toyota Camry for a red light violation.

8:19 p.m.: A gray 2012 Mazda 3 was stopped by 52 Pine St. No enforcement action was taken; the vehicle was misidentified as a suspected vehicle.

Assist Citizen

8:31 p.m.: A reporting party from Elements Hot Tub Spa, 373 Main St., wanted to speak to a police officer about an issue she had with an Uber driver. The involved party informed the officer that her driver did not want to driver her to Acton, Mass. so he cancelled the ride and dropped her off on Main Street. She was advised that is she was not satisfied with the customer service of Uber, she should contact them and make a complaint. No police services were needed.

Liquor Law Violation

10:18 p.m.: Multiple violations were observed inside Porta, 51 E. Pleasant St., including the following: 50 or more guests entered the establishment without staff scanning their IDs; bartending staff said food was unavailable until midnight; last call was not announced and alcohol was served until after 11:30 p.m.; guests were let in the establishment after 11:30 p.m.

Motor Vehicle Complaint

10:23 p.m.: A reporting party at 460 West St. reported a blue 2017 Toyota Rav4 seen crossing over the road lines. During the call to the police, the reporting party said the vehicle pulled behind the location.

Noise Complaint

10:54 p.m.: A reporting party stated the neighbors upstairs at 188 E. Hadley Road, Apt. 117H were loudly stomping on the floor. The called stated it was an ongoing problem and thinks the neighbors believe he is also too loud, so they are retaliating. The noise was gone upon police arrival.

Noise Complaint

12:02 a.m.: A reporting party stated that a pounding on the floor at 188 E. Hadley Road was continuing. Upon investigation, police determined that there were ongoing issues with the apartment, where the reporting party was advised to contact management.

12:08 a.m.: Loud music and voices were heard coming from an apartment at 188 E. Hadley Road. The noise was heard because the window of the apartment was open. The resident took some time to answer the door, however, they were cooperative in getting approximately a dozen guests to leave. The noise town bylaw was explained, and a warning was issued.

4:19 a.m.: A noise complaint was made because of loud yelling off the back porch of a residence on Tyler Place. The reporting party was calling from 53 Kellogg Ave. An officer walked up and down the street but did not hear noise.

4:25 p.m.: Extremely loud music was heard coming from speakers in the backyard of 59 S. East St. Residents were cooperative in turning off the music, the town bylaws were explained and a warning was issued.

4:30 p.m.: Approximately 200 people were seen in the yard of 201 Sunset Ave. Residents were cooperative but one received a town bylaw summons for noise.

4:30 p.m.: A reporting party stated that they saw a large party at 57 N. Prospect St, where residents were cooperative in clearing people out. A warning was issued.

11:56 p.m.: A reporting party stated they heard “disco” music coming from 35 Butterfield Terrace. Loud music and yelling could be heard resonating from the residence, where residents cooperated in letting around 200 people leave their party. The town bylaws and the Party Smart registration service was explained and a warning was issued.

Follow Up

12:09 a.m.: Police responded to Porta, 51 E. Pleasant St., because the establishment was still open for business with patrons inside. Alcohol was also being served. Police made sure the restaurant closed out and that patrons moved along quietly as not to cause further issues. A young-looking person was observed leaving the premise with a cup containing an alcoholic beverage. The 19-year-old male from Melrose, Mass. was arrested for having an open container of alcohol and for being a person under 21 in possession of liquor.

Motor Vehicle Stop

12:45 a.m.: The operator of a gray 2015 Toyota Corolla was stopped by 141 N. Pleasant St. and was issued a warning for a headlight violation.

9:51 a.m.: A verbal warning was given to the operator of a blue 2010 Toyota Prius by 313 N. East St. The motor vehicle was pulled over for going 67 mph in a 35-mph zone. A concerned dog owner was racing to the vet because her dog was sick.

11:51 a.m.: A gray 1993 Dodge Spirit was stopped in the vicinity of 199 Belchertown Road and the operator was issued a verbal warning.

2:54 p.m.: The operator of a gray 2015 Audi A4 was stopped by 10 Meadow St. and given a verbal warning for a red light violation.

5:38 p.m.: A black 2017 Hyundai Sonata was stopped at 70 S. East St.

10:06 p.m.: A red 2008 Dodge Charger was stopped at 95 N. East St. and was given a verbal warning.

11:26 p.m.: A blue 2004 Honda CR-V was stopped at 1 E. Pleasant St. for operating without headlights. The officer noticed signs of impairment and the operator admitted to smoking four to five hours earlier. Field sobriety tests were conducted and the operator displayed ability to safely operate their vehicle.

Disturbance

12:51 a.m.: An officer reported a small disturbance in the area of 258 Triangle St. A group of people were seen shoving each other, one of whom stumbled out into the rotary. The group stated they were all friends and were just joking around. They were sent on their way.

3:54 a.m.: A reporting party stated a college-aged individual was banging on her door at 727 Main St., Apt. 3. The person was a Black male in a red shirt. An officer spoke with the reporting party who stated they did not know the involved party at the door, nor did anyone at the residence know this person. The involved party’s friend stated that he was at the listed location. Apparent miscommunication occurred. The involved party moved along.

3:38 p.m.: An active disturbance was reported at 141 N. Pleasant St, with a male stating a female had stolen his iPhone from a bathroom at Thorne’s Market in Northampton. The phone was returned, and the person declined to press charges.

Community Policing

12:59 a.m.: A male was observed smashing a beer bottle in the bike lane in front of Antonio’s Pizza, 68 N. Pleasant St., who then turned and sat on a bench. No attempt was made to clean up the broken glass. The 21-year-old from East Walpole, Mass. was given a citation for littering.

Assist Other Police Department

1:51 a.m.: The University of Massachusetts Police Department were checking on two intoxicated parties on their property near N. Hadley Road. One was placed into protective custody by UMPD officers.

2:59 a.m.: UMPD requested APD do a check of the area by Puffers Pond, 200 State St., for a white BMW. They had a traffic stop on their campus and some females were concerned about their friend who was with a man they did not know.

Assist Citizen

7:13 a.m.: A reporting party from 1040 N. Pleasant St., Apt. 403, stated they were being scammed by a company representing themselves as “Liberty Power.” The reporting party signed a contract to switch power companies and did not have any documentation except an email from Liberty Power regarding the switch. The reporting party will be contacting Eversource to stop the action, and will also attempt to contact Liberty Power. An officer was advised by dispatch that the person was seeking documentation.

12:27 p.m.: A woman stated she believed a listed involved party showed up at her apartment, 497 E. Pleasant St., Apt. 182, yesterday after her son opened the door. The reporting party was not positive it was him, but wanted it on the record.

2:38 p.m.: A man reported that he attempted to cut a pine tree down in his yard at 369 Middle St. and the tree is now leaning toward the street. A tree company working a few houses down came to assist and lowered the tree safely.

10:20 p.m.: A reporting party called because she was upset at the way she was spoken to at a party located at 118 Sunset Ave. A reporting party approached a male because she thought he was harassing another girl. The male used some “choice words” to the reporting party and she took offense and wanted it documented.

Fraud

11:43 a.m.: A reporting party stated she was working online with a potential employer that requested her passport information prior to issuing her a check that she was to deposit before sending money back to the person. The reporting party, at 351 Pine St., deposited said check and Bank of America advised that they check was fraudulent. The reporting party stated she did not send any money to the fraudulent employer. She wanted the incident documented in case her passport information was used.

Traffic

1:37 p.m.: A reporting party stated there was a chicken in the middle of the intersection in the vicinity of 11 Meadow St. No chickens were found in the roadway, but police located free-roaming chickens at the listed address. The owner of the chickens was advised of the complaint.

3:57 p.m.: A reporting party stated that a 20 mph road sign blew over in the travel lane at 1101 West St. The sign was moved out of the way of pedestrians and the Department of Public Works was notified.

9:50 p.m.: A reporting party stated that there were no parking signs on her street and that two vehicles were parked there on Valley Lane. One vehicle was found parked in front of the residence where there was no signage and was moving his car. A warning was left on the other vehicle’s windshield.

11:53 p.m.: A reporting party stated they saw five to six people standing by the side of the road, jumping in and out of traffic at The Harp, 163 Sunderland Road. An area search came back negative; the people were gone on arrival.

Suspicious Motor Vehicle

2:35 p.m.: An officer was out with a white 2017 Kia Optima and a gray 2014 Chevrolet Cruze near 95 Montague Road. A security check of the premise was conducted. The two vehicles were parked in the lot with nobody around. Nothing suspicious was visible inside the vehicles. They seemed to be parked there while their operators stayed at houses nearby.

Liquor ID Check

2:38 p.m.: An officer conducted a liquor ID check at Porta, 51 E. Pleasant St. The restaurant was found to be in compliance with liquor laws.

5:40 p.m.: Panda East at 103 N. Pleasant St. was found to be in compliance of liquor laws.

Assist Business / Agency

3:55 p.m.: A reporting party stated that he thought one of the doors at the Amherst Survival Center at 138 Sunderland Road was unsecured and would like an officer to do a walkthrough with them. The building was checked, and nothing was abnormal.

Shoplifting

4:34 p.m.: A reporting party stated that they saw a white male wearing a suit and a white female wearing a red dress attempted to take a mug at The Blue Marble at 191 N. Pleasant St. The reporting party stated that the woman had the mug and that they took off toward Porta. The person was identified and explained they could not carry items from the store to show their friends. They seemed to have been under the influence of alcohol. The reporting party did not wish to press charges.

Suspicious

7:13 p.m.: A reporting party stated that an unknown alarm was coming from a home close to hers at 141 Leverett Road. The residents stated that they were unaware of what triggered it. Amherst Fire Department was on scene and assisted.

11:14 p.m.: An alarm was located coming from an apartment at 57 E. Pleasant St. There was no fire and AFD were handling the situation.

Liquor Law Violation

11:09 p.m.: An involved party was observed holding an open Rolling Rock beer bottle with contents while standing in line at Stackers Pub at 57 N. Pleasant St. The person, a 21-year-old from Northborough, was issued a summons for having an open container of alcohol.

11:13 p.m.: An involved party was observed walking on N. Pleasant Street with an open Bud Light aluminum bottle in hand. The person was issued a summons for open container of alcohol.

Disturbance

12:25 a.m.: Loud music could be heard coming from 407 N. Pleasant St. where a group of 10 residents were found inside. The town bylaws for unlawful noise were explained and a warning was issued.

3:25 p.m.: A reporting party stated that someone was inside the Yiddish Book Center at 1021 West St. harassing the other patrons and the staff. The person was asked to move along, and she did.

Motor Vehicle Stop

12:45 p.m.: A red 2009 Nissan Maxima was issued two warnings at 56 S. Pleasant St. for a headlight violation and going 35 mph in a 25-mph zone.

2:02 a.m.: A gray 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was stopped at 40 Main St. for a headlight violation. A warning was issued.

7:02 a.m.: A gold 2003 Chevrolet was stopped for operating at 45 mph in a 35-mph zone in the town’s center. A warning was issued.

8:25 a.m.: A 2018 Kia Optima was stopped for failure to stop at a stop sign at 312 College St. A warning was issued.

Assist Amherst Fire Department

12:45 p.m.: An alarm at The Spoke at 35 E. Pleasant St. prompted police to send help for AFD. One officer spoke with a person who stated they saw a drunk person drinking from pitchers at the bar’s pull station who may have potentially pulled the fire alarm. Officers assisted Spoke staff with clearing out the crowd during the fire alarm.

Liquor Law Violation

12:53 p.m.: A person was observed walking on Pray Street with a pitcher of beer that seemed to have been stolen from The Spoke. The person was then identified by a witness as the male party who pulled the fire alarm. The man, a 21-year-old from North Attleboro, was arrested for false fire alarm and open container of alcohol.

Assist Citizen

12:59 a.m.: An officer was flagged down by an individual at 670 E. Pleasant St. who said they had passed a drunk individual having difficulty getting up on the road. The people were eventually located. One 17 years old and the other 18 years old. The two individuals were released to a sober 25-year-old resident on Emily Lane where they were staying for the night.

Suspicious

1:02 a.m.: A reporting party stated they had seen around 10 white males in the area of 593 Main St. trying to rip a stop sign out of the ground. The men were gone upon police arrival.

7:42 p.m.: A reporting party stated that there were two white males wearing black suits knocking on doors asking about the word of Jesus Christ near 1040 N. Pleasant St. An area search came back negative.

Citizen Transport

1:16 a.m.: Underage and drunk involved parties were transported to a friends’ house on Emily Lane after the 12:59 a.m. assist citizen call.

Motor Vehicle Complaint

1:39 a.m.: A reporting party said they almost got hit while in the crosswalk by 150 Fearing Street. The vehicle and the person were gone on police arrival.

Noise Complaint

2:00 a.m.: A reporting party stated they heard noise coming from 1069 N. Pleasant St. Around 100 people were at the party, windows were down, loud music was playing and voices were coming from the yard. Residents initially were cooperative but then expressed “no sense of urgency” in moving people along. Guests were uncooperative and a 24-year-old from Topsfield and a 22-year-old from Warrington, Pa. were placed under arrest for unlawful noise.

Trespass

2:11 a.m.: A trespass form was filled out by The Spoke at 35 E. Pleasant St. after a person was identified as the individual who pulled the fire alarm and exited with an open pitcher of beer. The trespass was served in hand during bail.

6:27 p.m.: A reporting party stated that they required assistance in serving a trespass at an apartment near Amherst Coffee at 28 Amity St. The person understood and the trespass was entered into the system.

Animal Complaint

9:08 a.m.: A reporting party stated that a dog was tied outside of Amherst Coffee at 28 Amity St. The dog’s owner was found sitting in a chair outside the location enjoying a cup of coffee. There were no problems.

Motor Vehicle Crash

11:13 a.m.: A gray 2008 Jeep Wrangler was entering the flow of traffic from a driveway at 65 West St. as it struck a parked blue 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. An accident report was completed, and the damage was over $1,000.

Assist Other Police Department

5:03 p.m.: A reporting party stated that there was erratic motor vehicle operation heading into Amherst from Pelham near 291 Pelham Road. The vehicle was gone on arrival.
