Maruti Ciaz loses top spot in sedan sales – April 2019

Sales of Hyundai Verna have scaled past sales of its two arch rivals Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Honda City in April 2019. In the past month, Hyundai Verna saw sales to the extent of 2,932 units as compared to 2,739 units of Ciaz and 2,394 units of Honda City sold in the same month.

This puts Hyundai Verna as a clear leader in the C segment sedan space in April 2019. The other C Segment sedans such as the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Nissan Sunny, Toyota Yaris and Fiat Linea saw combined sales of just under the 3,000 unit mark.

These are very low sales figures, as compared to what each of these three cars had been reporting a few months ago. From selling over 4k units a month, each of these cars are now reporting under 3k units a month.

In 2018 a total of 42,605 units of the Verna were sold registering 64 percent growth as compared to 25,904 units sold in 2017. The 3rd gen Verna gets a more premium stance as compared to its earlier counterpart. It is presented in a range of petrol and diesel engine options that include a 1.4 liter petrol engine offering 99 bhp power and 134 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The Verna also gets powered by a 1.6 liter and a turbo diesel engine offering 121 bhp power and 151 Nm torque and 126 bhp power and 260 Nm torque respectively mated to a 6 speed manual and automatic gearbox. There is also a 1.4 liter turbo diesel engine powering the Hyundai Verna capable of 89 bhp power and 220 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift was launched in 2018. It is a strong contender in the segment. It is larger in dimension as compared to the Verna and also priced lower than the Verna, starting from Rs.8.2 lakhs. It gets powered by a new 1.5 liter turbocharged diesel engine offering 94 bhp power and 225 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox and a 1.3 liter diesel engine offering 89 bhp power and 200 Nm torque. The Ciaz also gets a petrol engine option with the 1.5 liter petrol hybrid engine offering 104 bhp power and 138 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox while the petrol also receives a 4 speed torque converter option.

Once a segment leader, the Honda City sedan has now been pushed to third spot. The Honda City was launched in 2014 and has been seeing steady dip in sales losing out to segment leaders Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz. However, the next gen Honda City is being planned for launch and this could bring City back on top. 2020 Honda City will have larger dimensions as compared to the outgoing model. The current Honda City gets petrol and turbo diesel engine options with the 1.5 liter petrol engine offering 117 bhp power and 145 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and CVT. The turbo diesel engine is capable of 98.6 bhp power and 200 Nm torque mated to a 6 speed manual.
