Traffic wardens in Leicester have slapped parking tickets on the same car a staggering 119 times in the past 12 months.

The Toyota Corolla has amassed more than £8,000 in unpaid fines but as it is foreign registered its owner cannot be traced.

The vehicle is at the head of a top ten of individual cars - nine of them registered abroad - which have racked up nearly 800 penalty notices between them.

In total £55,000 of fines have been issued to the ten cars.

Leicester City Council's director of highways Martin Fletcher said: 'Parking enforcement is an important way of helping to ensure that all drivers leave their cars in places that are safe, and that show consideration for other road users.

'It is frustrating that persistent offenders are often the hardest to recover payment from, but we will use the full range of our legal powers to pursue fines.

'Where this involves the use of bailiffs, offenders can expect a substantial extra bill on top of their unpaid fines.

'Where vehicles are found to be unregistered, these will be reported to the DVLA.

'We will tow and impound vehicles in exceptional cases and will always remove illegally parked cars that are creating a dangerous obstruction.'

The council says it takes all possible steps to get drivers to pay their fines but sometimes it proves impossible.

It was recently revealed that more than £2 million of parking and bus lane fines were written off because the vehicles could not be traced.

The council's finance director Alison Greenhill told councillors: 'The tax disc display has significantly impacted.

'Now there is no requirement to display tax discs we have nationally seen a massive increase in unregistered vehicles or false addresses.

'There are a lot of fines issued that we find very difficult to collect.

'We do look at repeat offenders and offenders in certain areas because the best time to catch someone is when they are with their vehicle rather than just sticking the ticket on.'
