As far as camper vans go, the Volkswagen California is a great choice if you’re living in Europe. Not too large but not on the small side either, the Beach presented at the Caravan Salon 2019 comes with a kitchen, a feature that was previously reserved to the Coast and Ocean.
Based on the California 6.1, this model promises enough space and facilities for a family of five to go on camping trips and cook their own meals. But wait, there’s more! There are now two versions of the Beach, called Tour and Camper, and the two share the digital camper control system in the roof console.

Both of them can be optioned with a hydraulic pop-up roof, and as standard, you’ll have to work those muscles. The Tour doesn’t feature a kitchen, and if you were wondering, the Camper features a smaller kitchen than the Coast and Ocean versions mentioned in the first paragraph. Thanks, Volkswagen!

A single-hob gas cooker on the left and a worktop on the right will have to make do, along with a cover plate that also serves as a splashback. Under the hotplate, the Germans have integrated a storage compartment and an enclosed compartment for the 1.8-kilogram gas bottle. So, what else is there to cover?

A folding table in the sliding door, folding chairs in the tailgate, and awning tracks in black are also featured, along with the Composition Color radio with six loudspeakers. Climatic air conditioning, swivel seats, a two-seater bench with a fold-out bed extension and mattress, as well as a sliding door on the right are a few other highlights, along with the 230-volt and 300-watt socket.

Two USB ports on the outside of the front passenger seat should keep the youngsters happy on the long haul, and blackout screens for the cab are also standard. For something that started out as a passenger van, the California 6.1 Beach is fairly competent for the adventure-oriented family.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles didn’t mention any powertrain options, but given the updates on the Transporter 6.1, the 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbo diesel should be the engine of choice. In its high-output setting, the powerplant generates close to 200 PS and plenty of torque.
