A Piedmont man told police he brought a suspected overdose victim to a local hospital, only to have the man drive away in his SUV.

Gadsden police were called to the East Gadsden medical facility at about 9 p.m. Sunday. The man said he was at the Stop and Shop in Ballplay when he noticed a man who appeared to have overdosed.

Trying to render aid, he loaded the man, roughly 40 years old, named Josh, into his blue Isuzu Ascender and headed for the hospital. He said the man was mostly unresponsive throughout the drive.

When they got to the hospital, he asked the staff for help getting the man into the ER. As they were about to help, the victim moved from the passenger seat into the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle out of the parking lot.

He was last seen driving down Goodyear Avenue toward U.S. Highway 278, the vehicle’s owner said.
