Maruti Alto K10 goes out of stock – Has it been discontinued?

The discontinuation of the Alto K10 might be a letdown for some, but the S-Presso is quite a decent package for what you pay (if the Renault Kwid does not fit your bill).

As per a few dealers, Maruti Suzuki has silently discontinued the Alto K10 from its portfolio for the year 2020. The popular budget hatchback will not be updated to BS6 emission standards, but make way for its virtual successor, the S-Presso hatchback-crossover. The Maruti S-Presso is garnering good sales figures across the country. Dealerships have stopped accepting bookings for the Alto K10 and most of them have already cleared their existing BS4 stock by the end of 2019.

The Maruti S-Presso was launched back in September 2019 at a starting price of Rs 3.69 lakh, for the Std (O) variant. The top-of-the-line VXI+ AGS (AMT automatic) variant comes at Rs 4.91 lakh. On the other hand, the Maruti Alto BS4 carried a starting price tag of around Rs 3.60 lakh. Prices mentioned here are ex-showroom.

A variant of the Alto family was recently spied on test.

Even though it shares the same power plant as the Alto K10, the S-Presso has been BS6-compliant right from the start. The 998cc three-cylinder petrol engine makes 68bhp and 90Nm of torque while mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or the brand’s AGS automatic unit.

The Maruti S-Presso is essentially the production version of the Future-S crossover concept that was unveiled back at Auto Expo 2018. The Future-S concept looked funky and interesting back then, but one could argue that the S-Presso has got questionable aesthetic proficiency. The Maruti S-Presso has a tall stance to give a ‘mini-SUV’ feel and primarily rivals the likes of the Renault Kwid.

Compared to the discontinued Alto K10, the Maruti S-Presso is much better equipped. The crossover gets a 7.0-inch Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The S-Presso is noticeably roomier as well. There is a range of accessories and customisation choices available right from the factory. Two styling packages are also available: Energetic and Expedition.

It is to be noted that only the Alto K10 is being discontinued while the entry-level Alto (or more commonly known as the Alto 800) still remains available at an ex-showroom starting price of around Rs 2.95 lakh. The Maruti Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc three-cylinder petrol motor that makes roughly 47bhp and 69Nm of torque. The engine is only available mated to a 5-speed transmission. The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 was the virtual successor of the legendary Maruti 800. The hatchback had remained as the best-selling Indian car for many years, only to step away for other Maruti Suzuki products such as the Dzire compact-sedan.
