Bentley Mulsanne "Locomotive Edition" Is All The High-Speed Train You Need

Despite its lavish appearance, the Bentley Mulsanne certainly isn't the type of automobile that can be understood by simply throwing a glance at it. Instead, its brilliance resides in the driving experience, one that offers the fragrance of a classic car, mixing this with the safety and convenience delivered by a modern package. As such, the thought of this flagship sedan's departure makes for a sad moment.

Last week, the British automotive producer announced that the retirement of the Mulsanne would be delayed, with the move being dictated by the global crisis-derived temporary closure of its factory in Crewe.

You see, the swansong of the Mulsanne is the 6.75 Edition by Mulliner, the company's recently-reinforced coachbuilding arm. Only 30 examples of the luxury sedan are being placed into collector's vaults, but the said delay means deliveries are now set to take place toward the end of this summer.

To celebrate the Mulsanne and its sexagenarian V8, Bentley has released a short movie - imagine a history book on this topic condensed into a clip and you'll be aware of the production's intentions, with this including landmark moments such as the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance debut or the 190 mph (306 kph) Bonneville Salt Flats run of the majestic four-door (this is the second video below, the one on the right).

Then again, I had the pleasure of putting together a bespoke short movie when reviewing the Mulsanne Speed last year. The video, which you'll find below (the clip on the left), explores the luxury train nature of the Flying B machine. How come? Well, at times, this is precisely the sensation experienced by those traveling in such a Bentley.

As for what the future holds, the new Flying Spur might be a bouquet of technical and lavish assets, but a true Mulsanne replacement this is not. Thus, we can only hope that, with the market shifting from such sedans to SUVs, the next Bentley flagship model will echo the Mulsanne's brand-defining character.
