Westport police report five arrests for drug, protection order and motor vehicle violations

WESTPORT - Over the course of this weekend five people had been arrested by the Westport Police Department for various offenses, according to a press release from the department.

On Oct. 2, the Westport Police Department received a complaint of a Violation of an Abuse Prevention Order. A subsequent investigation by Officer David Leite resulted in John M. Grota, 57, of 379 Tickle Road, Westport, being arrested. Grota was arraigned at Fall River Second District Court and given a future hearing date.

On Oct. 4, Officer Alberio Mendina was parked on Old Bedford Road in the area of Interstate 195 and exit 9 off ramp and observed a vehicle travel through the stop sign. Medina discovered the operator, John Berube, 59, of 225 Shove St., Fall River, had a suspended license. After placing Beurbe under arrest he was found to be in possession of brass knuckles, and he was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License (Subsequent Offense) and Carry a Dangerous Weapon (brass knuckles).

Also on Oct. 4, Officer, Jeremey Dellecese was operating a marked police cruiser on State Road when he observed a motor vehicle traveling at him on the wrong side of the highway. He also noted in his police report that the vehicle had its high beam lights illuminated. Dellecese was able to stop this vehicle and informed the driver he was operating on the wrong side of the road. After a field sobriety test Yuri Fernandes, 33, of 67 Washingtong St., Apt 2, New Bedford was placed into custody and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor (2nd Offense), Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License and One Way Violation.

On Oct. 5, Dellecese was on patrol on State Road when he queried the registration to a Chrysler Aspen. The registration came back to a Chrysler Town and Country. A subsequent investigation revealed the operator S. Ronald Parker, 48, of 178 Burnside Ave, Swansea, provided bill of sale and title. These documents showed different dates along with no purchaser information listed on the title of the vehicle he was now operating. Dellecese observed a clear plastic baggie that was on the floor in front of the driver’s seat, which is believed be cocaine. Parker was placed under arrest for Possession of Class B Controlled Substance (Cocaine). During the booking process another clear glassine baggie fell out of Parker's pant leg. This substance believed to be crack cocaine. Parker was charged with Attaching Plates, Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Possession of Class B (Controlled Substance) Subsequent Offense.

Also on Oct. 5, Officer Michael Chicca was dispatched to Jiggs Street, Westport, regarding a complaint of a Violation of an Abuse Prevention. Upon further investigation, Shawn Borges, 53, was placed under arrest Violation of an Abuse Prevention.
