OAKLAND — California Highway Patrol officers are seeking witnesses to help with an investigation after a fatal hit-and-run collision that hospitalized a man and briefly closed Interstate 580 lanes, authorities said Sunday.
According to preliminary information, officers responded shortly after 3:10 p.m. to eastbound I-580 lanes west of the Edwards Avenue off-ramp for a report of a collision, CHP Officer Sean Layton said.
When officers arrived, they found a green Plymouth Breeze sedan with major collision damage on the roadway’s right shoulder.
The Plymouth’s passenger, identified only as an adult female, was pronounced dead at the scene, while its driver, an adult man, was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, Layton said.
Investigators were not immediately able to confirm initial reports of a multi-vehicle collision, but believe the Plymouth was in the roadway’s No. 1 lane when a vehicle struck it from behind before fleeing the scene.
“We’re really hoping someone can call in and provide us with some information,” Layton said. “We don’t have a lot of details.”
All lanes were briefly blocked around 4:40 p.m. to allow investigators to conduct measurements, reopening after about 15 minutes, but no Sig-alert was issued to advise drivers to avoid the area.
