BMW are very much in the headlines at the moment. The German car giant did recently of course launch its first ever XM, its debut in the world of Super SUVs. This new machine certainly offers up some somewhat controversial styling, but it's one car that is certainly going to keep us talking. Convertible sportscars though is an area in which BMW is no strangers, and along with the new XM, the brand has launched its 2023 Z4 sportscar, refining the current generation for 2023.

The Z4 has been a part of the BMW lineup since 1989, and this latest version is an evolution of the current generation which is the G29. The G29 made its debut in 2018, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance that August. You might expect then the BMW Z4 updates for 2023 to really shake up the model and elevate it to new heights. Well, it will certainly do the latter but the changes to the 2023 model year edition are quite minor. This car is all about refinements and subtle changes, and not anything like a big revolution.

The 2023 Z4 Gets A Refreshed Look And Tech Package

If you were expecting big changes for the refreshed Z4, then you are going to be disappointed. The refreshed Z4 falls under the LCI range of BMWs, which stands for Life Cycle Impulse. This is simply what BMW calls its facelifts. What we have on this LCI Z4 is a revised M Sport package, standard for the Z4 sDrive30i trim of the car. These changes are noticeable at the front of the car, with the three-section air intakes. These are in the front bumper and have been recently seen on other BMW M models.

This means the 2023 Z4 features a redesigned kidney grille, and the M Sport package comes as standard. BMW say the grille has gained significantly in visual impact, and that is certainly one way to put it. There are additions to the rear and side of the car as well, with similar touches to that at the front. There are larger air breathers rearwards of the front wheel arches, while the spoiler is fully integrated into the boot lid. There are some new side sills across the Z4 and the side intakes themselves feature a new design.

New Hues And Wheels Make The Z4 More Appealing

To complete the visual changes with the 2023 Z4, BMW is offering optional 19-inch M wheels that are exclusive to the Z4. That caps off the main visual changes, but there is still more. A few more exterior colors are also introduced for the car, and these include Thundernight Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic. BMW are also debuting M Shadowline lights for the 2023 model year, and these come as an option on the Z4 for the already optional adaptive LED headlights.

BMW haven’t just worked on the exterior though, with there being a few interior changes too. The new M Sport package for the Z4 includes some rather nice sports seats plus M pedals and a footrest and a dashboard that is all upholstered in SensaTec leather. An M leather steering wheel completes the changes to the Z4’s cabin. When it comes to major changes for the Z4, that is basically it. The 2023 model year additions are thus limited to a few exterior changes and interior changes, but then the old adage does go if it isn’t broke then don’t fix it.

Some Things Don't Change For The BMW Z4

When it comes to under the hood of the Z4 it is much the same as before. There is the US-only sDrive30i model with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 hp. The top of the range Z4 though is still the Z4 M40i with its 382 hp, this time thanks to a 3.0-liter inline-six engine. Transmission wise, the 2023 Z4 still features the eight-speed automatic for both of the engine choices. There are though still rumors about the possibility of a six-speed manual for the US market, but those are still rumors at this point.

Sometimes Subtle Changes Are All That Is Needed

The Z4 isn’t changing massively for 2023, but BMW seems to be of the mindset that subtle changes are all it needs. And it has its all-new XM to grab the headlines at the moment. BMW may have only delivered 55,000 Z4 Roadsters since the market launch in 2020, but the brand seems quite content with that, and would probably be happy to see figures nice and stable at the very least. It is one of the best cars in the current BMW range and one of the few not totally ruined by the brand's bizarre and controversial recent design choices.
