A stolen car was found abandoned early Friday after being crashed in the 2300 block of Freeport Road in New Kensington.

New Kensington police are investigating after a stolen car was found abandoned early Friday after being crashed along Freeport Road.

The crash was reported shortly after 6 a.m. in the 2300 block of Freeport Road, across from Mary Queen of Apostles School, fire Chief Ed Saliba Jr. said.

A Dodge Charger was found resting on its left side with its underside against the doors of a detached, three-car garage.

Saliba said firefighters responded because there was at first concern someone was trapped inside the car, but no one was found.

“Whoever was driving it fled the scene,” he said. “There was nobody around the vehicle when the police and the fire department got there.”

Saliba said he did not know whether there was any video of the crash. The homeowner whose garage was damaged did not have any cameras that captured it.

Saliba said the car had Pennsylvania plates. He did not know from where it had been stolen.

New Kensington police could not immediately be reached for information about the crash or the theft of the car.

Saliba said the middle door of the garage was damaged, and the car was totaled. The car was towed away, and firefighters cleared the scene after about an hour.

How many people had been in the car was not known, Saliba said.

“For someone to go through all of that and run away, they were pretty fortunate they didn’t get hurt,” he said.
