Le Moyne women’s lacrosse falls to Vermont, 17-4

Burlington, Vt. -- Ava Vasile scored five goals to lead the University of Vermont to a 17-4 victory over the Le Moyne College women’s lacrosse team on Wednesday at Virtue Field.

The Dolphins opened the game’s scoring about four minutes into the contest. Junior attacker Grace Detor (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) scored from the front of the crease off a dish from senior midfielder Rhonee Shea Pal (Canastota, N.Y./Bishop Grimes).

Vermont answered with the next seven goals over a span of 12:29. Vasile won the draw control after Detor’s goal and raced up field to net her 45th goal of the season.

Following three-and-a-half minutes of scoreless play, McKenzie Ballard converted a free-position shot in an extra-player situation for her 22nd goal of the campaign. Less than one minute later, Vasile scored to become Vermont’s career points leader. Jane Trauger tallied the team’s 4th-straight goal with 3:40 left for her 27th tally of the year. Vasile completed the scoring in the opening quarter with 1:26 left off a pass from Kendall Traveis.

The Catamounts continued their run with two goals in the first 1:31 of the second quarter, both of which came from Ballard.

Junior attacker Reagan McQuade (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) snapped the run with her seventh goal of the season at the 12:32-mark.

Vermont countered with a 4-0 run to take an 11-2 lead into halftime. Vasile started the run at the 11:11 mark after receiving a pass from Claire Adelhelm. Erin Kloostra then netted her seventh goal of the year after collecting a pass from Trauger, who followed with an extra-player goal with 3:32 left off a feed from Adelhelm. The duo reversed roles with 1:00 left as Adelhelm posted her fifth goal of the campaign.

The teams split the first four goals of the third quarter. Detor got the scoring started at 11:25 with a quick-stick tally from the front of the crease off a pass from the right from senior attacker Sarah Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) in an extra-player situation. Ballard pushed the margin back to nine with 9:06 left off a feed from Lydia Doraz.

Pal completed her team’s scoring with 6:01 remaining on a free-position shot for her 23rd goal of the year. Lauren Lefebvre countered with 1:32 to go after taking a pass from Ciera Licare, who closed out the scoring in the third with a free-position tally with 31 seconds left.

Vermont scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter. Trauger recorded her 29th goal of the season with 12:59 to play. Vasile registered her fifth goal of the afternoon with 2:37 left and Ballard scored off a free-position shot with two seconds left for her fifth marker of the day.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Paige Crandall (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) registered 10 saves in the setback. Anna Rosenberger recorded six saves in the victory for the Catamounts.

Le Moyne (8-7), which fell to 5-4 all-time against the Catamounts, closes out its Northeast Conference slate at noon Saturday at Howard University.
