A 19-year-old driver from Exeter has been jailed for crashing into a car carrying a child and pregnant mother. Cameron Trench-Butler put his foot down and sped along country lanes while trying get away from police in Exwick, a court heard.

He was already in trouble with police for a spree of offending which included drug dealing in the city. The defendant was described as having a "developmental disorder" that made him behave in an immature way when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court for sentence.

The judge said prison would be harsher for Trench-Butler than for other people but was the only option. The teenager was sent to a Young Offender Institution for two years and three months.

The court was told that on January 12 police on patrol saw a BMW being driven dangerously on Cowley Lane and Barley Lane. Trench-Butler drove at excessive speed along narrow roads and country lanes, around blind bends and blind rises.

It ended in a collision with a vehicle carrying a four-year-old child and pregnant mother. Judge David Evans said it was "fortunate that no one was injured," but the defendant's driving clearly risked hurting people.

At the time of the offence Trench-Butler was on court bail and subject to a community order for other offences. He was arrested in July of last year for selling drugs direct to users and for having an offensive weapon.

Whilst being investigated for those crimes he was arrested again for handling a stolen Audi S3 car. He was caught because he filmed himself inside and admiring it.

Trench-Butler pleaded guilty to offences including being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs and cannabis, handling stolen goods and dangerous driving.

Judge Evans said: "You are developmentally younger than your chorological age. You are genuinely remorseful."
