BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A Baltimore man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot the man who fathered his girlfriend's child, according to court records.
The Baltimore Police Department announced on Friday that detectives had arrested Darius Doles, 30, in connection to a shooting on March 9 that left a 33-year-old man with a graze wound to the head.
The shooting happened around 9:35 a.m. That's when officers received a ShotSpotter alert informing them that someone had fired off five rounds in the 700 block of West Mosher Street, authorities said.
Charging documents describe how detectives assigned to the police department's Baltimore Community Intelligence Centers accessed cameras at the intersection of Fremont Avenue and Pitcher Street to get an idea of what happened.
The camera footage showed that a man, whom detectives later identified as Doles, exiting a house in the 600 block of West Mosher Street and walking quickly to a red 2012 Hyundai Sonata with Virginia plates that was parked in the 1400 block of Myrtle Avenue, according to the charging documents.
The car took off southbound on Myrtle Avenue at a high rate of speed.
Once officers knew what type of vehicle to look for, they were able to track down the Hyundai Sonata. Court records state that they found it near the intersection of Dolphin Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. That's where they detained Doles.
Officers canvassed the 1400 block of Myrtle Avenue for evidence of gunfire, too, and found six 9-milimeter cartridge casings on the ground where Doles' car had been parked, according to court records. Afterward, they took Darius to the Western District for an interview.
Meanwhile, police learned that a man with a gunshot wound had showed up at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center to get medical treatment for his injury.
The gunshot victim was allegedly uncooperative with investigators and wouldn't tell them where he was shot, according to authorities. Detectives eventually learned that he was the father of Doles' girlfriend's 6-year-old daughter.
Charging documents show that the gunshot victim and Doles' girlfriend had a verbal custody agreement over their daughter prior to the shooting.
Additional investigation showed that the gunshot victim had driven past Doles' house and then southbound on Myrtle Avenue before getting shot.
Private surveillance video didn't show the shooting, but it did make clear that only Doles and the gunshot victim were in the vicinity when the shooting happened, according to the charging documents.
Court records state that Doles returned home for three minutes before driving off while the gunshot victim took himself to the hospital.
Police arrested Doles on March 12 and took him to the Central Booking and Intake Center.
He is being charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and several handgun violations.
