An investigation into a robbery is ongoing after a teenager was targeted by suspects wielding a sledge hammer in Middlesbrough.

The 18-year-old victim was driving his Ford Fiesta along Beverley Road, in Middlesbrough, when he was stopped by a group of males at around 8.50pm on Thursday, March 13. Cleveland Police say the group were reported to be in possession of weapons, including a sledge hammer.

They tried to prevent the teen from driving away and when he did the group got into another vehicle and pursued the victim, who had younger passengers in the car. They came to a stop on Saltersgill Avenue, near Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust, and the victim told the two younger passengers to run for safety.

The 18-year-old remained with his car and was approached by one of the male suspects, who punched him in the face and drove away in the his car. A description of the suspects or the vehicle they were driving has not been released by Cleveland Police at this time.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Detectives are appealing for information after a robbery in Middlesbrough.
