A 32-year-old James City County woman died Monday afternoon after she drove her vehicle across railroad tracks and into the path of an oncoming train, police said.

State police said Sarah Jones Mazariegos was driving a Toyota Highlander that crossed the tracks near the intersection of Peach and Peninsula streets, in the community of Norge, about 4:30 p.m. She failed to stop at the sign controlling the crossing and was struck by an Amtrak train, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a state police spokesperson. None of the 90 train passengers was injured.

The private crossing was near Mazariegos’ residence on Peach Street, police said.
