NASCAR Hall of Fame opens Darlington Raceway exhibit to honor track’s 75th anniversary
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WMBF) - The Track Too Tough To Tame is getting a special spotlight to help celebrate a major milestone.
A new exhibit chronicling Darlington Raceway for its 75th anniversary opened Tuesday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte.
NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Mark Martin were among those who helped cut the ribbon for the new exhibit, which officials say will pay tribute "to the greatest races, competitors and milestones in the track’s storied history."

“This was a fitting way to unveil this incredible exhibit and begin Darlington Raceway’s 75th Anniversary celebration,” Darlington Raceway President Josh Harris said in a statement. “The NASCAR Hall of Fame does a first-class job honoring the rich legacy of our sport, and we look forward to all of the fans enjoying an exhibit that highlights everything that has made Darlington Raceway Too Tough to Tame throughout the past 75 years.”
Darlington Raceway first opened in 1950 and was the first paved NASCAR track to be more than a mile in length. The inaugural Southern 500 also in September of that year and has remained a fall tradition for the sport since.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame exhibit will feature four cases, artifacts from the track’s past and more. Some of the notable artifacts include the track’s original sanctioning agreement, Buck Baker’s NASCAR Roadster Division championship jacket from 1952 and a plaque presented to Petty in 1966 after he passed his father’s NASCAR Cup Series win record.
