Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its third generation CLA-Class for 2026. Here's what we know...

The new CLA retains its signature four-door coupe silhouette but has grown in size. Its length has increased by 33mm to 4 721mm, making it slightly longer than the previous-generation C-Class. The width is now 1 854mm, 25mm wider than before, while the height has grown by 28mm to 1 469mm. The wheelbase has been extended by 61mm to 2 789mm, largely to accommodate the underfloor battery in electric models.

The exterior features a striking front fascia with an illuminated star pattern grille and a prominent, illuminated central Mercedes star. Optional Multibeam LED headlights, with star-shaped daytime running lights, are connected by a light bar, while the rear showcases star-patterned taillights linked by 40 illuminated louvres.

Inside, a ‘Super-screen’ dash dominates, comprising a 10.3-inch instrument display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and an optional passenger-side display of the same size. The MBUX infotainment system, enhanced with Google’s Gemini AI, powers the interface. However, the touch-slider volume control and steering wheel touch-swipe buttons remain a point of contention for some.

The model line-up will initially include an entry-level hybrid variant that has a 1.5l four-cylinder engine with a 1.3kWh battery and a 20kW motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. All electric models include the CLA 250+ and the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology. The electric-only CLA 250+ boasts an 85.5kWh battery, powering a rear-mounted 200kW motor. It achieves a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds and offers a claimed WLTP range of 792km.

For performance enthusiasts, the CLA 350 4MATIC adds a front-mounted 80kW motor, enabling all-wheel drive and a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds. Both electric models share a 210km/h top speed.

All derivatives are yet to be confirmed for South Africa with the outgoing line-up starting from R921 156 with the CLA200 Progressive and ending at the CLA220d AMG Line priced at R998 956.
