The Ministry of Environment and Tourism says it is considering sports tourism as a key strategy to diversify Botswana's tourism offerings. Minister Wynter Mmolotsi highlighted that sporting events, like the Kazungula Marathon, have already attracted tourists from neighboring countries such as Zambia, Swaziland, and Namibia, and are seen as a valuable opportunity to boost the tourism sector.
Speaking to Gabz FM News, Mmolotsi explained that sports tourism offers the potential to not only draw visitors but also to extend their stay in Botswana. He noted that by hosting more sports events, the Ministry hopes to increase the number of nights tourists spend in the country.
Mmolotsi also added that while wildlife tourism remains central to Botswana's offerings, government is also looking to expand into cultural, heritage, city, and wellness tourism as part of its broader strategy to encourage tourists to stay longer and explore more diverse experiences.
