2 injured after vehicle crashes into tree in Newport

Newport police said two people were injured after a car collided with a tree early Wednesday morning.

According to police, they responded to the intersection of Ocean Drive and Hazard Road for a report of a loud crash at around 12:43 a.m.

Police said they found a white Toyota Corolla against a tree with heavy front-end damage when they arrived at the scene.

The passenger of the vehicle, 29-year-old Taunton man, was outside of the vehicle, Newport police said.

The driver, 29-year-old Fall River woman, had been trapped inside the vehicle and was unconscious.

Newport police said fire departments responded and extricated the operator from the vehicle.

According to authorities, both had been wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Officials said she was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries to her legs and pelvic bone. Police said she remains unconscious and is in critical condition.

The passenger was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is instable condition.

Newport police said the crash remains under investigation.
