Russia and North Korea are in talks over a potential visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told reporters.
“Just two weeks ago, during my visit to North Korea, we discussed this issue,” Rudenko said, according to Interfax.
He added that discussions are also underway regarding a possible visit by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Pyongyang to continue what he called a “strategic dialogue with our Korean friends.”
On March 24, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the invitation extended to Kim Jong Un during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea last year remains in effect, though the timing of the trip has yet to be determined.
Unofficial reports suggest that Kim may travel to Moscow in May 2025 to attend celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. As of late March, neither Moscow nor Pyongyang had confirmed his attendance.
Kim has visited Russia twice — in 2019 and 2023 — both times traveling by armored train to the Russian Far East. He has never made an official visit to Moscow.
