He says: “We would have liked to have seen the government’s Spring Statement reinforce its long-term commitment to net zero carbon by 2050. In order to see the UK lead the way in decarbonisation, we need clear government direction and to give confidence that can spur continued investment in the sector.
“While it is clear that government is taking steps to fix the current housing crisis, with the OBR concluding planning reforms will bring housebuilding to a forty-year high. However, thought must go into building new homes to ensure their future-proofing and sustainability. If these homes are built with low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps, it will contribute to reducing gas consumption, low carbon emissions, and ensure homes are more sustainable.
“Additionally, we need to see measures that will lower electricity costs for households. This can be done by reducing levies on low carbon electricity in comparison to high carbon gas so that prices are more competitive for households.
“At a time of geo-political uncertainty, that undoubtedly will cause volatility for energy costs, we need to move to more sustainable energy and heating, Heat Pumps are the most efficient use of primary energy and therefore deliver the best return for investment in our energy grid.”
