The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has asked shop owners not to be selling expired goods.
MBS Public Relations Officer Monica Khombe said this in Salima District on Wednesday when the bureau destroyed products confiscated from supermarkets in Blantyre and Mulanje districts.
Among the items were maize flour, rice, soft drinks and alcohol, valued at about K19 million.
Khombe said MBS was dedicated to ensuring that Malawians do not consume harmful products.
“We want to protect consumers from unhealthy goods and we will continue conducting inspections,” she said.
Consumers Association of Malawi Chief Executive Officer John Kapito commended MBS for the initiative.
He, however, faulted the bureau for neglecting its role over the years.
“While their actions are commendable, we should not have to applaud them for fulfilling their legal responsibilities,” Kapito said
He urged MBS to maintain this vigilance as expired goods continue to be sold in the country.
