Millions of people in the UK and around the world will be finding out the date of Eid ul Fitr 2025 this weekend.

This is the first big Eid event in the Islamic calendar and will be based on whether the first crescent of the new moon has been seen in any particular location.

Eid will celebrate the end of Ramadan, which involves all healthy adult Muslims taking part in daily fasting from early morning to sunset.

The next month, Shawwal, gets underway with Eid ul Fitr, which means the festival of breaking the fast. But will it be Sunday or Monday?

The answer to that depends on which moonsighting announcements you follow. This year, we saw a 'split Ramadan' which began either on March 1 or March 2.

As custom says that scholars and citizens must look for the moon on the 29th day of a particular month, the different start dates of Ramadan mean this will take place on Saturday, March 29, for some and Sunday, March 30, for others.

Experts have therefore predicted that Eid ul Fitr 2025 will be on Sunday, March 30, for some countries and communities and on Monday, March 31 elsewhere.

It's been calculated by astronomers that the moon won't be visible in most parts of the world on Saturday. So that would mean Ramadan continuing for one more day into Sunday and Eid then being on Monday.

However, despite the seemingly impossible moonsighting, Saudi Arabia has already marked Sunday as the start of Eid and many believe it will follow its predetermined national calendar of dates.

For those looking for the moon on Sunday, it's been forecast that the crescent should be easily visible, meaning Ramadan comes to an end at sunset and Eid is on Monday, March 31.

This means that for Saudi Arabia, the date of Eid is astronomically predicted to be Monday, March 31, but a sighting may still somehow be declared despite the forecasts, so it could end up being Eid on Sunday, March 30.

This will be significant for those in the UK who follow the Saudi declarations, including Green Lane Masjid in Birmingham, which organises the huge public Eid events.

For those looking for the moon on Sunday, it's probable that Eid will be on Monday, March 31, because the crescent will be easily visible. This will apply to those in the UK who base dates on local rather than overseas moonsightings, as well as people in Morocco, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
