A man from Boston, allegedly under the influence of methamphetamines, was arrested in Vero Beach after deputies discovered a pickup truck that had crashed into a ditch.

The Indian River County Sheriff's Office (IRCSO) said that on Wednesday, deputies responded to a car crash near 1916 15th Street Southwest in Vero Beach at 8:08 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they reported finding an unoccupied DMC pickup truck in a ditch. As deputies were on scene investigating, they said that they saw a man and woman walking along the road.

According to the probable cause affidavit, they were approached by a witness who pointed them to his driveway, where the suspected driver, identified as Gideon Rivera, 38, was attempting to leave.

IRCSO said that deputies commanded Rivera to the ground and took him into custody. Upon searching him, they reported finding keys belonging to the truck in his pocket. However, he allegedly denied being the driver and said the woman he was with was driving.

The deputies noted that Rivera appeared to be under the influence. When questioned, he reportedly admitted to using “ICE,” which is a street name for methamphetamine. He claimed the woman was driving the truck and that she had given him the keys.

Rivera was taken to the Cleveland Clinic for medical clearance and then was transported to the Indian River County Jail, where he stands accused of leaving the scene of a crash and driving under the influence
