WASHINGTON TWP., Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police say they are investigating a tragic accident that happened Sunday morning on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
A statement from Pennsylvania State Police says troopers were called to the scene in the northbound lanes of I-476 mile marker 67 near the Lehigh Valley Tunnel at 9:09 a.m., for the report of a crash involving a group of motorcycles.
The statement says when officers arrived, it was determined a 2019 Honda HRV, operated by a 24-year-old female from Perth Amboy, NJ, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of travel and struck two motorcycles from a group of six that were driving together, causing a fatal crash.
A 50-year-old man from Bristol, Bucks County, who was driving a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 24-year-old male also from Bristol, Bucks County was injured and treated at the scene by Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services (NOVA), and taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for his injuries.
The operator of the Honda had minor injuries.
Police say traffic traveling northbound on the Turnpike was detoured onto the Lehigh Valley exit. Traffic entering the Turnpike from State Route 22 was unable to access the Northbound lanes.
The scene was cleared by 1:20 p.m. and all lane restrictions were lifted.
