Motability Scheme update as manufacturers switch focus to electric vehicles

Many Motability Scheme customers may be more tempted to switch to an EV following the latest price list update

The Motability Scheme has updated its price list with an increased focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The initiative, run by Motability Operations, allows people who claim qualifying disability benefits to allocate some of their award towards leasing a new car, wheelchair-friendly vehicle, or scooter.

Currently, the service is available to those claiming Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), and War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS). In its latest price list update, the scheme highlighted that car manufacturers are focusing more on EVs.

This means that customers have more electric cars to choose from, including many without the need for an advanced payment. Furthermore, customers who decide to get an EV will be given extra support with the charging of the vehicle.

This may prove to be more attractive to some customers considering a switch to EVs as the scheme also noted that the price of repairing and maintaining petrol and diesel cars has increased, which may also lead to a higher Advance Payment for these respective vehicles.

What is an Advance Payment?

When a customer decides to lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, they can choose to make an Advance Payment or not. This is the amount of money that will be required to be paid upfront and is an addition to the weekly mobility allowance.

This Advance Payment helps to cover the difference between the cost of a car and the allowance paid over the length of the vehicle's lease period. However, it's important to note that this is not a deposit and is a non-refundable payment.

If a customer does decide to get a vehicle with an Advance Payment, they will need to pay it in full to their dealer before they can acquire the new vehicle.
