Arrest made after man, 31, dies in M53 crash
The motorway was closed for several hours following the crash
An arrest was made after a man died following a crash on the M53. Emergency services were called to junction 2 near Moreton Spur on the motorway at around 3.35pm on Sunday, April 6.
It followed a report a blue Suzuki motorcycle had been in a crash with a road barrier on the sliproad which leads from the northbound carriageway onto the Moreton Spur. When emergency services arrived at the scene they found a 31-year-old man, from the Wirral, had suffered serious injuries.
He was treated at the scene but died from his injuries and the man’s family are being supported by specialist officers. Merseyside Police said an investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
A 30-year-old man from the Wirral has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving. He is currently in custody, police said. The M53 was closed for several hours on Sunday while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, Lead Investigating Officer from Merseyside Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU), said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this sad time and they are being supported by specialist officers. It is now a priority for us to get answers for them about how the collision occurred and my team are working to establish key facts.
“This collision happened on a busy part of the motorway network. Early enquiries show there were a number of vehicles in the area at that time, and I believe it may have been witnessed by members of the public or have been captured on dash cameras.
"I would appeal directly to anyone who saw anything and who has yet to speak with my team to please get in touch. In addition, a male has been arrested in connection with this matter and remains in police custody. He will be interviewed by detectives later today.
“I believe that both the deceased and the arrested person have been riding their motorcycles having visited a pub on Ferry Road by the River Mersey and have travelled from that location to the scene of the collision. To that end I appeal for anyone who may have seen a blue Suzuki Bandit and a black Kawasaki travelling together just prior to the collision to please get in touch.”
