A driver was allegedly spotted "inhaling nitrous oxide" while "driving erratically" into Liverpool city centre. Merseyside Police said the driver of a blue Volkswagen Golf had been spotted by concerned passers by who reported him to police.

The force said the driver was taken to custody for drug testing. He was also reported for a number of other offences including careless driving, drug driving, using a mobile phone and not in proper control of a vehicle.

Posting to Liverpool Police's Facebook page, the force said: "The young man driving this car thought it was a fun to speed into Liverpool, intimidate other drivers, drive erratically in the city centre, consume Nitrous Oxide and cannabis and generally make the world around him a little less pleasant or safe.

"Liverpool Targeted team have educated him. Intercepting the car in the city centre, he is currently in to a custody suite where he will be drug tested and reported for a number of offences including careless driving, drug driving, using mobile phone and not in proper control of a vehicle.

"If/when convicted, he can expect a minimum 12 month disqualification, a rather unpleasant fine and 11 years of eye watering insurance premiums if or when he eventually gets his licence back.

"A huge thank you to the people who called in their concerns and helped us locate this driver before he caused someone harm. Your vigilance has helped make our streets a safer place for everyone."
