Driver faces multiple charges after fatal crash on I-95
A high-speed chase down Interstate 95 in Brevard County ended with three people dead.
The victims have been identified as Alicia Maria Carter, 31; Eleasya Fulton, 24; and Leon Holmes, 41. The three were passengers in a white Mercedes that ultimately crashed into two trucks on the side of an exit ramp.
A newly released arrest affidavit said 41-year-old Vernon Hodges reached speeds of up to 110 mph, which prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to attempt to pull him over.
Dashcam video from a witness showed a trooper following the Mercedes as it weaved in and out of traffic.
The affidavit also stated that the tag on the Mercedes matched that of a green GMC pickup truck. The trooper activated his lights and sirens, but Hodges did not pull over.
As Hodges began to exit at Exit 201 in Cocoa, he traveled onto the outside shoulder and struck the back of a tow truck that was assisting another tow truck on the side of the road, according to the affidavit.
The report said the impact caused catastrophic damage to the front and passenger side of the vehicle. After the impact, FHP said Hodges exited the driver’s seat through the destroyed windshield. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.
The details of the three victims are too graphic to disclose, but all three were partially ejected and died at the scene, according to fire rescue crews.
During the crash investigation, troopers said they noted an odor of alcohol in the vehicle and found an open, empty Corona bottle.
Hodges' blood alcohol level was .147, according to troopers.
A 39-year-old man from Palm Bay, who was helping with the tow truck on the side of the road, was also injured in the crash. He was taken to the hospital.
Hodges faces a number of charges, including reckless driving, driving under the influence, driving without a license, causing a crash, first-degree murder, and DUI manslaughter.
