Driver faces multiple charges after fatal crash on I-95
CHASE THAT ENDED WITH THREE PEOPLE DEAD ON THE SIDE OF I-95. A WITNESS SHOT THIS VIDEO AS THAT WHITE MERCEDES SPED PAST CARS BEFORE SLAMMING INTO TWO TOW TRUCKS. TODAY, WE ARE NOW LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE MAN WHO SURVIVED AND IS NOW CHARGED WITH DUI MANSLAUGHTER. WESH 2’S MEGAN MORIARTY IS LIVE NEAR THE SCENE ON 95 NEAR STATE ROAD 520, WITH THE LATEST ON THE INVESTIGATION. MEGAN. AN ARREST AFFIDAVIT CALLS THE DRIVER A HABITUAL TRAFFIC OFFENDER. HE HAD TWO PREVIOUS DRIVING UNDER THE. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE CONVICTIONS AND AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH ON I-95. HIS BLOOD ALCOHOL LEVEL WAS AT 0.147. HE ACTUALLY HAD HIS LICENSE REVOKED BEFORE THE CRASH EVEN TOOK PLACE. A HIGH SPEED CHASE DOWN I-95 IN BREVARD COUNTY ENDED WITH THREE PEOPLE KILLED. THE VICTIM’S 31 YEAR-OLD ALICIA MARIA CARTER OF MELBOURNE. 24 YEAR OLD ALICIA FULTON OF PALM BAY AND 41 YEAR-OLD LEON HOLMES OF VERO BEACH WERE THE PASSENGERS INSIDE A WHITE MERCEDES THAT ULTIMATELY CRASHED INTO TWO TRUCKS ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DASH CAM VIDEO FROM A WITNESS SHOWS WHAT LED UP TO THE CRASH. YOU CAN SEE A FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPER FOLLOWING THE WHITE MERCEDES AS IT WEAVED IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC TO GET AWAY. THE DRIVER, 41 YEAR OLD VERNON HODGES, WAS GOING 110MPH. ACCORDING TO A NEWLY RELEASED ARREST AFFIDAVIT, WHICH IS WHY THE TROOPER INITIALLY TRIED TO PULL HIM OVER. THE AFFIDAVIT SAYS THE TAG ON THE MERCEDES MATCHED A GREEN GMC PICKUP TRUCK. THE TROOPER ACTIVATED HIS LIGHTS AND SIRENS, AND HODGES WOULD NOT PULL OVER. AS HODGES BEGAN TO EXIT AT EXIT 201, HE TRAVELED ONTO THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER AND STRUCK THE BACK OF A TOW TRUCK. IT WAS BEING REMOVED FROM THE ROADSIDE BY ANOTHER TOW TRUCK. ACCORDING TO THE AFFIDAVIT, THE REPORT SAYS THE IMPACT CAUSED CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE TO THE FRONT AND PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE IMPACT. FHP SAYS VERNON JAMES HODGES EXITED THE AREA OF THE DRIVER’S SEAT THROUGH THE DESTROYED WINDSHIELD. THE DETAILS OF THE OTHER VICTIMS ARE TOO GRAPHIC, BUT THE THREE WERE ALL PARTIALLY EJECTED AND DIED IN THE CRASH IMMEDIATELY, ACCORDING TO FIRE RESCUE. TROOPERS SAY THEY NOTED ODOR OF AN ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE IN THE VEHICLE AND FOUND AN OPEN, EMPTY CORONA BOTTLE. HODGES AND THE 39 YEAR OLD MAN FROM PALM BAY, WHO WAS WORKING ON THE TOW TRUCK ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR THEIR INJURIES. HODGES WAS LATER RELEASED AND CHARGED WITH DUI MANSLAUGHTER FOR ALL THREE VICTIMS. AND I DID SPEAK WITH ONE OF THE VICTIMS FAMILY MEMBERS BY PHONE. THEY ARE ASKING FOR SOME SPACE RIGHT NOW AS THEY DEAL WITH THIS TRAGEDY, SAYING THAT THIS CRASH SHOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED. AS FOR HODGES, HE IS DUE BACK IN COURT FOR HIS ARRAIGNMENT

A high-speed chase down Interstate 95 in Brevard County ended with three people dead.The victims have been identified as Alicia Maria Carter, 31; Eleasya Fulton, 24; and Leon Holmes, 41. The three were passengers in a white Mercedes that ultimately crashed into two trucks on the side of an exit ramp.A newly released arrest affidavit said 41-year-old Vernon Hodges reached speeds of up to 110 mph, which prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to attempt to pull him over.Dashcam video from a witness showed a trooper following the Mercedes as it weaved in and out of traffic.The affidavit also stated that the tag on the Mercedes matched that of a green GMC pickup truck. The trooper activated his lights and sirens, but Hodges did not pull over.As Hodges began to exit at Exit 201 in Cocoa, he traveled onto the outside shoulder and struck the back of a tow truck that was assisting another tow truck on the side of the road, according to the affidavit.The report said the impact caused catastrophic damage to the front and passenger side of the vehicle. After the impact, FHP said Hodges exited the driver’s seat through the destroyed windshield. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.The details of the three victims are too graphic to disclose, but all three were partially ejected and died at the scene, according to fire rescue crews.During the crash investigation, troopers said they noted an odor of alcohol in the vehicle and found an open, empty Corona bottle.Hodges' blood alcohol level was .147, according to troopers.A 39-year-old man from Palm Bay, who was helping with the tow truck on the side of the road, was also injured in the crash. He was taken to the hospital.Hodges faces a number of charges, including reckless driving, driving under the influence, driving without a license, causing a crash, first-degree murder, and DUI manslaughter.
