According to the crash report provided by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, on March 21, Upshaw was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 and was attempting to park in a marked parking space on Peters Road.

The crash report states Upshaw accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes, traveling over the raised concrete curbing onto the sidewalk.

“It’s a tragic, hurting thing,” said Carlean Benning, who lives nearby.

Benning has lived on Peters Road for six years and never experienced anything like this – especially in an area where she says kids are always playing.

“It’s so sad that one of our babies got killed out here like that,” said Benning. “I watch over the kids and we as a community, I feel like should get together and pay more attention to those kids and the babies when they’re here in the street.”
