Tata Motors was India’s second highest-selling carmaker in March 2025, leaving Mahindra and Hyundai behind. In the past seven months, Tata has been mostly relegated to the third or sometimes fourth spot, but with 48,462 cars last month, the manufacturer has reclaimed the second position in the retail sales rankings.
- Tata recorded a 5 percent year-on-year sales increase in March 2025
- Mahindra’s sales rose 17 percent, while Hyundai’s dropped 5 percent
- Market share decreased year-on-year for Tata and Hyundai but grew for Mahindra
Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai sales in March 2025
Mahindra stood third on the charts with sales of 46,297 cars and a 13.20 percent market share, up 17 percent and 1.17 percent YoY, respectively. Hyundai came fourth with 42,511 cars, down 5 percent, and its market share dropped to 12.13 percent from 13.50 percent.
Hyundai’s longstanding second place dominance disrupted
Hyundai had held the second position in monthly sales for a long time, but that has changed recently. Mahindra outsold Hyundai in February 2025 to occupy second place, and Tata overtook both in March.
Though the exact reasons are unclear, it’s likely that Mahindra’s popular SUV line-up, including the Scorpio N, Bolero, Thar and XUV700, and Tata’s numerous EV offerings helped them. Curiously, the Korean carmaker launched the Creta Electric in January but still slipped in the sales charts in subsequent months.
The domestic car market recorded cumulative retail sales of 3,50,603 units in March 2025, a growth of 6.27 percent YoY.
