Magyar Suzuki’s Esztergom Facility to Become a Smart Factory
A new, multi-phase innovation development project has begun at Magyar Suzuki’s factory. The HUF 5.3 billion R&D project supported by EU funding is led by Suzuki as part of a consortium. During the four-year project, Magyar Suzuki Corporation and its partners will introduce smart manufacturing processes and build an innovative supplier network. As a result of this modernization, new, competitive, safe and thoroughly tested Suzuki prototypes will be created at Suzuki factory by 2020.
Factory of the Future
The Esztergom factory has been playing a leading role in innovation and applying manufacturing technologies since 1992. Magyar Suzuki Corp. concluded its three-year factory modernization project in 2016, implementing significant developments in automation and robotization. Following the modernization, manufacturing processes became safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly. With respect to the level of robotization, Magyar Suzuki leads the way in Hungary with 770 robots working currently throughout the production line, where installation is aided by smart systems.
Cooperation with Hungarian suppliers
Magyar Suzuki Corporation pays special attention to cooperating with its supplier partners.
The company regularly implements development programs for its Hungarian suppliers. Since 2015, several quality assurance and innovation training courses have been organized with the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency’s (HIPA) HUF 20 million subsidy, with the participation of a total of 39 domestic suppliers, and the program continues this year.
As part of the current R&D project, the company, as the leader of the consortium, is working in close cooperation with its professional and technology partners: PEMÜ Plc., Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd. for Applied Research and Pázmány Péter Catholic University.
The project’s overall budget of HUF 5.308 bln has two sources: a self-funded portion of HUF 2.712 bln and another HUF 2.596 bln granted by the state’s Széchenyi 2020 program.
As a result of this investment, by 2020 an innovative close cooperation network will be built up including consortium partners and the suppliers.
Areas of Development
The ambitious factory innovation project will have been implemented in several areas by 2020:
• Major development goals in vehicle prototype development are weight reduction, low fuel consumption, low environmental impact, safety, and the use of recyclable materials.
• A major, decisive step on the way towards the factory of the future is the preparation for laser welding technologies.
• Having a connected network of welding robots is an important element of smart manufacturing.
• Magyar Suzuki’s supply chain involves around 240 suppliers delivering more than 4,500 types of parts to the Esztergom factory. The aim of the development of the logistics system is the implementation of the complete electronic tracking of products, a significant step towards the implementation of digital production control.
• The aim of the material development process is the production of a lighter polymer to be used as a raw material. With this development, Magyar Suzuki will further increase safety, contribute to the preservation of the environment, and reduce the fuel consumption of Suzuki models.
• Magyar Suzuki Corp. wishes to transform its current supplier agreements into an innovative supplier network. The members of this network will work together when it comes to research and product and technology development.
