It's not long until Father's Day - it falls on Sunday, June 16.

The average dad in Britain spends four hours a week as a taxi driver, 27 days a year on DIY duties and if you put a price on the number of spiders he's cleared for you - it'd be £10,000.

With Father’s Day approaching in the UK, online gift retailer Getting Personal has uncovered the true cost of fatherhood - and if it came with a salary, it would be £67,000 per year.

As added extras, dads are also our sage advisers - worth £22,500 per year - our personal tutors - £3,248 per year - and general caregivers with the average costs of raising two children now £20,961.

So, how exactly do you treat a dad that just about has and knows it all - yet deserves to be celebrated this June? Well, we've got you covered.

When is Fathers Day 2019?

Mother's Day might feel like it's only just over, but Father's Day will be here before we know it. It is usually held on the third Sunday of June. This year, it falls on Sunday June 16. Unlike Mother's Day, the USA and the UK celebrate Father's Day on the same day.

This is the most common day to celebrate Father's Day, with France, Canada, South Africa, Greece, China, Netherlands, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan and many others marking the day.

What about the rest of the world?

In similar style to Mother's Day , Father's Day does vary in date around the world. Here are the dates for your diary if you're abroad:

  • Russia: February 23 (Defender of the Fatherland Day)

  • Andorra, Bolivia, Honduras, Italy, Portugal, Spain: March 19

  • Germany: Ascension Day - May 10 in 2018

  • Lithuania, Switzerland: First Sunday in June

  • Denmark: June 5

  • Austria, Belgium: Second Sunday in June

  • Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon: 21 June

How is Father's Day traditionally celebrated?

The idea originated in the USA and has been celebrated on the third Sunday in June since 1966 (

Following in the footsteps of Valentine's Day which celebrates your loved one and Mother's Day to show the woman in your life just how special she is, Father's Day is a worldwide occasion in celebration of your dad.

Falling on the third Sunday in June, it celebrates the impact fathers and father figures have on the lives of their children. Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, it's an internationally recognised event.

Father's Day began around 100 years ago over in the US and has since made its mark all over the world.

How did Father's Day begin?

The exact origin has been disputed. Most believe it began with Sonora Dodd, from Washington, who came up with the idea after hearing the Mother's Day sermon in 1910 and thinking (not without good reason) why the dads didn't have their own day too.

She and her siblings had been raised by their father after their mum died in childbirth.

Dodd began a campaign...and well, the rest is history.

Other people argue it was Grace Golden Clayton from West Virginia, who suggested celebrating the day in 1908. She apparently put the suggestion forward after a mine explosion in a nearby town killed more than 360 men - the idea being it was a day for children to remember their fathers.

Whatever the reason, we're glad of it.

How is it celebrated around the world?

We know what the traditions are in the UK, but what about abroad?

In Germany it's called Vatertag or Mannertag (or men's day).

It's traditional in some places for men to go into the woods with a wagon of beer, wine and meats.

In China it's marked on the 8th August because eight in Chinese is 'ba' and a colloquial way of saying father is 'ba-ba' - so eighth day of the eighth month sounds like father.
