Plans have been revealed for two wind turbines in the north Herefordshire countryside that would each be taller than the BT Tower in London.

Wetmore Farm Ltd between Leintwardine and Ludlow has put forward a request for a screening opinion for the plan, to ascertain whether it meets the threshold for a full environmental impact assessment (EIA) before it can be permitted.

Standing some 3 kilometres apart on an eastward-facing slope, the two 4.2-megawatt wind turbine would each have a hub height of 111 metres and tip height of 180 metres.

For comparison, the BT Tower in London is 177 metres tall.

The application, which gives limited information on the design and operation of the turbines, contends that the project does not meet conditions which would require an EIA to be carried out.

Herefordshire Council says it expects to decide on the application, on which public comments are not being accepted, by April 8.

Labour said shortly after coming into power in July last year that it was committed to doubling onshore wind energy production by 2030, removing the de facto ban on onshore wind in England brought in under the previous Conservative government.
