Family members, cat allegedly attacked

A 21-year-old Brandon woman faces numerous charges after allegedly assaulting her grandmother and mother and injuring a cat at a residence in the city’s east end Thursday morning.

Police say when officers arrived they discovered that the intoxicated woman had allegedly attempted to tackle her grandmother and had whipped her mother in the head with a wet rag.

The woman is also accused of shaking, swinging and further mistreating a cat.

She was charged with assault, assault with a weapon and injuring or endangering animals.

She was taken to a Brandon Police Service detention cell until a Friday morning appearance in court.

One arrest leads to another

An arrest during a traffic stop in Brandon led police to a car dealership and a second roadside arrest on Thursday afternoon.

At 12:20 p.m., Brandon police conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Queens Avenue with a vehicle that had fled from police about one week earlier. When the man operating the vehicle stepped out of it, police say, officers noticed a large icepick lying beside the driver’s seat.

The man, 46, was arrested for possession of a weapon.

Further search of the vehicle located a seven-millimetre firearm in the rear hatch. However, police say the operator of the vehicle told officers that he had been a passenger earlier, that the previous driver had been dropped off at a car dealership and that he was unaware of the contents inside the vehicle.

Police went to the car dealership where the previous driver had reportedly been dropped off. The dealership staff verified the man had taken a vehicle for a test drive and had been gone for some time.

Police located the dealership’s vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but it proceeded to move forward at a slow pace until police were able to box it in.

Inside the vehicle, police allegedly found beer, “moonshine,” 3.5 grams of cocaine, a small amount of methamphetamine and two knives.

Police say the man, 40, was also breaching numerous conditions of a release order.

He was arrested, held in detention cells and was due to attend court on Friday.

He is charged with multiple firearm offences, six counts of breaching a release order and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

The 46-year-old man from the initial traffic stop was released on an appearance notice with a court date of June 19 on a charge of possession of a weapon.
